Off-Road Safety Tips

Chances are if you own a Jeep, you’ve been off-roading a time or two. The thrill and excitement of pushing your Jeep to the max and seeing what it can do is something you just can’t help. While offroad driving is fun and adrenaline pumping, it is still a dangerous activity.

While your Jeep is known for its off-road capabilities, its actual capability depends on the skill and preparation of the driver and occupants. Proper preparation can help you have a safe and great trip. So here are some off-road safety tips to think about before your next off-road adventure.

Before you leave

1. Tell your friends and family where you are going. If you are planning to tour a national park off-road, please inform the park authorities about your route, the duration and the date you will start.

2. Understand that while driving your Jeep off-road, you will be without cell coverage more than you will have. Therefore, it would be a good idea to purchase a satellite radio, HF radio, or UHF radio and learn how to use them.

3. Prepare a good first aid kit and make sure you know how everything works.

4. Prepare a good tool kit along with basic spare parts. Regardless of whether you know how to use any of it, a passerby stopping to help might.

During your off-road adventure

1. Make sure you are well rested both physically and mentally at the start of every off-road trip.

2. Wear a pair of high-quality sunglasses to reduce glare from the sun while driving.

3. If possible, travel with another vehicle. If something happens to your vehicle, you have a way to get help.

4. Don’t be the only driver. It’s a good idea to share driving responsibilities to reduce driver fatigue. Take regular breaks throughout the day.

5. Make sure you know where facilities are located, such as fuel, repairs, food, water, medical facilities, and lodging.

6. When leaving the cities, check your mileage. If you break down and need to call for help, you’ll be able to tell them how far you are from the nearest town.

One good thing to keep in mind is that you may not be alone during your off-road adventure. Everywhere you go there are wild animals and natural elements of the area. If this is your first time driving your Jeep off-road, it’s a good idea to take it easy until you feel the ground beneath you. The most important thing is to have fun. Your Jeep was built to enjoy.
