Is competition a destructive force in society?

Everything comes with positive and negative sides, especially when it comes to competition. On the one hand, it brings a lot of hopes and advantages, while in the negative approach, it conveys ruinous and left-handed jealousy. Most people believe that competition makes their life more challenging and complicated.

One of my classmates at the school level was often confused as to why other students compete with him on academics. He was an above-average student, who used to get good grades and the attention of teachers with the help of his brilliance and knowledge, but he was never the best in the class. He firmly believed that he was the smartest student in the class. Even after this, he never managed to get too generous grades, as he never believed in competition, in competing with other students. This approach never allowed him to achieve what he wanted, because he never competed with anyone, as he believed that he would get everything he had in mind, with the help of his knowledge and experience. However, it was initially successful in its career, but later its participants, in their workplace, were blessed (or let’s call it ‘cursed’) with a competitive mindset, who were ready to take over their profile. They competed with him, which my friend never liked. So he started moving to new organizations and this is the only reason behind the instability in his life. However, I still believe that he will have a great life ahead of him, but he needs to originate his competitive creature from deep within.

Why People Think Competition Is Destructive

When I talked to my friend about his non-competitive approach, he told me: “I hate with jealousy, when a person is willing to cut the throats of others just for the sake of their improvement.”

Well, jealousy is the only bad thing about the competition. Otherwise, it is something that has evolved the human race, from the trees to Mars. Without competition, society would not have progressed to this point.

Why competition is the necessity

I firmly believe that, for a better environment and lifestyle, competition is necessary in society. There are eight billion people on the planet. Without competing with others, you cannot achieve what you want, as there are thousands of people who also want to achieve the same. You can capture the competition scene in schools, workplaces, markets, economy and business, and even in your family. In the following excerpts from the article, I have described some of the positive impacts of competition on our society; You cannot avoid these affirmative factors.

End of the monopoly – It is a consumer driven market, where monopoly is the biggest nuisance. When there is only one participant in the market, domination occurs, in which the seller sets (raises) the price of his poor-quality goods and services. If there are also other players in the market, there will be healthy competition, which will drive down excessively high prices. It will be beneficial for society to have access to low-priced (and good quality) goods and services.

Innovation – Due to antagonism, manufacturers will forcefully prepare innovative products to earn their unique identity in the market. For example, it was the competition (between the United States and Russia) that put the human space exploration program to the test in the 1960s. Furthermore, the competition also encourages political leaders to work in their constituencies.

Growth and development – Competition promotes the growth and development of the nation and society. Hoping for a sustainable economy, the finance minister lays the foundation for growth and development programs for the nation. This plan is made to take over the economy of some other nation.
