Travel writing – Writing in the third person

If you’re writing travel articles, consider what’s best to allow you to get the maximum chance of getting your articles published. One of the tips to keep in mind is whether to write in the first or third person.

There are sure to be some smart and popular travel writers out there. Some of them are family names. Others are new and inspiring. These people find it easy to write in the first person. They say “I did this” or “I did that”. Your articles are of a high standard.

However, it can be difficult to write this way, and especially if you’re not established, it can be difficult for readers to connect with you. Frankly, people don’t always want to know what YOU did, what YOU ate and where YOU went. After all, his article is not an autobiography. It is a travel item.

People feel more comfortable when you speak and write in the third person (unless they know you or know about you). So you would say, “Continue on Western Avenue” instead of “Continued on Western Avenue” and “Try the duck in wine sauce” instead of “I had the duck in wine sauce.”

You are giving your reader a guide, a model, and the opportunity to freely base their travel plans and experiences on the data you can provide. You are not asking them to experience a typical day on YOUR travel itinerary.

Let your readers experience the travel information you have in an objective and factual way. Write in the third person, not the first.
