Sex in a storage facility: urban myth or reality?

You already know the situation, a couple is getting a little too loving and it is clear to anyone who is looking at what is on their minds; moment when some obscene joker yells, “Get yourself a room!” The question is, are they referring to a hotel room or a room in a storage facility? There is a growing opinion that hiring a storage room as a place for a small ‘handkerchief’ is becoming more widespread, but is this true or just an urban myth?

Let’s examine some of the problems. Horny couples in dire need of finding a private place to put their thoughts into action is a well accepted fact. So what are your options? It is safe to assume that they do not have the option of a nearby house or flat. The desperate can choose a quiet corner of a building, a park, or an alley. Neither is exactly romantic and they are usually cold or dirty. Worse still, the couple could easily be discovered, which, for all but the most exhibitionist dudes, is a rather unpleasant prospect. There is also the modern curse of the surveillance camera. It is not surprising that the place chosen has traditionally been a hotel. The advantages are obvious; a bed (usually a double), clean sheets, a warm and dry room, and privacy. Gone are the days when the hotel receptionist was looking for proof of wedding rings and the same last name. So far so obvious. So why look for more? Well, simply the cost. Hotel rooms are not cheap and in big towns and cities they can be staggeringly expensive. It can be cheaper if you book early and get a deal, but our love partner is often not in that category.

So what about a personal storage facility as a venue? Well, a potential customer can roll up and rent a room on the spot. The size of the rooms ranges from the size of an old red phone booth to the size of a double or larger garage. The length of stay is supposedly four weeks, but storage warehouse managers often allow shorter stays. The rooms are spartan. As spartan as you can be. Four walls, a roof and a door are your thing. The walls and doors are usually made of sheet steel, the floor usually concrete. It will be located in a corridor of other similar rooms through which other clients will be able to walk. It is clearly far from the comfort of a hotel room. It does not heat up. It may be dark and the walls and doors are not exactly sound resistant. Customers are expressly prohibited from living in your storage unit and certainly cannot stay overnight. In addition, the facility usually closes at five or six at night. It’s a perfect place to safely store possessions, but is there any appeal for the urgent needs of an aroused partner? Well, it’s private, it’s cheap, and many times there are very few clients. A week’s rent for a room is possibly half the price of a night in a hotel. An enterprising soul can install some kind of furniture to make the procedures more comfortable, but that’s not exactly spontaneous. It is also just an option for a ‘get together’ during the day.

So is there any proof of such events? Simply put, are people having sex in storage facilities? Unsurprisingly, there is very little real evidence. My own experience working in the automated storage industry is that there is the strange suspicion, even a racy anecdote, but very few employees at personal storage facilities have encountered customers using automated storage in this way. I don’t doubt that there are certain horny souls who may have used their storage unit as more than a means of storing their personal belongings, but for the most part I suggest that this is simply an urban myth.
