The Miniature Pomeranian, a miniature dog of the Nordic family, is a compact, short-backed, active dog. Originally used as a sled dog in Iceland and Lapland, the Pomeranian has now become a great companion for humans. Contrary to the size available on the market today, Pomeranians were bred to be much larger and weigh around thirty pounds. But breeders later went to great lengths to make the breed smaller. According to the standard specified by the American Kennel Club (AKC), a Pomeranian can weigh between three and seven pounds, however, Pomeranians that participate in dog shows must weigh between four and six pounds.

The Miniature Pomeranian has an exquisite double coat consisting of a soft, dense undercoat and a long, straight, shiny, rough-textured topcoat. The coat is significantly dense on the neck, the front of the shoulders, and the chest. This makes the fur in these areas look like a ruffle. Body hair is longer compared to hair on the head and legs. The tail is really beautiful with long straight hair, which overflows extensively. The lifespan of a typical Pomeranian is around twelve to fifteen years, however in some cases they can live up to twenty to thirty-five years.
Although health complications are not as common in the Miniature Pomeranian, they can still suffer from some complications, such as dislocation of the patella. This is a common thing among miniature breeds. Additionally, Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome, hip dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, and collapsed trachea can occur in the Pomeranian. They are also susceptible to skin diseases such as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots, follicular dysplasia, and a few others.
Regular grooming is essential for the Miniature Pomeranian. Regular brushing of your little Pomeranian will keep him mat-free and keep his hair thick and luxurious. Although the coat needs little trimming, shaving is almost unnecessary. Regular ear and nail care is also strongly recommended. It’s not a good idea to bathe your Pom too often, as it can damage the texture of the skin and the shine of the coat by removing essential oils. Like many other breeds, the Miniature Pomeranian is very susceptible to dental problems, so regular dental care is also necessary. A minimum of one tooth brushing per week is required.
