Menopause – Change of life?

For many women, menopause can be life-changing, bringing emotional turmoil as well as many physical symptoms. As women reach the end of the supply of eggs they are born with, women may feel a sense of loss, as they are no longer able to have children, they may feel less attractive, and they may also experience a sense of inadequacy. by some women and may feel that they have lost their identity as a woman.

The physical symptoms that women can experience can also be quite debilitating. The most common are hot flashes and night sweats. For each individual case, the severity can range from occasional mild hot flashes to whole body, every 5 minutes. They can start suddenly, sometimes they will start on your feet and then work their way up the body, sometimes your face will turn red. These hot flashes may also be accompanied by nausea and dizziness.

The cause of hot flashes is not fully understood, although one theory is that changes in estrogen level may affect the hypothalamus, the glans penis that controls body temperature, so by making your body think it’s too hot, the answer is to cool the body by sending blood to the skin (redness of the face and neck) and causing hot flashes.

Other symptoms may include vaginal dryness, mood swings, reduced libido, osteoporosis, bloating, weight gain, hair loss/thinning, and headaches.

Women struggling with many of the above symptoms are given HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) by their GPs.

HRT can be effective in reducing some of the symptoms of menopause, unfortunately when women stop taking HRT the symptoms can come back for a while, meaning they need to go back to HRT at a lower dose. However, HRT has also been shown to be beneficial in helping to lessen the effects of osteoporosis in menopausal women.

There are other natural substances and dietary changes that can be taken along with HRT to allow you to experience a more comfortable menopause. If you want, you can go through menopause without using HRT and just using dietary advice and alternative natural therapies. There are now many more treatment options available to menopausal women.
