5 ways to protect the environment outdoors

Imagine yourself outdoors. You are camping, exercising in your garden, or just taking a walk. You feel at one with nature… but are you harmonizing that nature while doing it? The chances that you are harmonizing the environment are quite good, even when your intention is to enjoy the environment or beautify it.

Be more aware of what you are doing outdoors. Most people don’t even think about how much they are harmonizing the environment when they make their gardens more pleasing to the eye. Also, people rarely take the time to enjoy their lawns and gardens. Today, we want to use the most powerful equipment to get the job done in the shortest amount of time.

Stop thinking of it as a job and start thinking of it as a way to enjoy nature as well as a way to get fantastic exercise. Get the whole family involved and head out for some much-needed sun while the ozone layer is still protecting you…just be sure to wear your sunscreen. Here are ten ways you can protect the environment when you’re outdoors.

1. Get rid of that old gas powered lawn mower and ride-on lawn mower. Instead, use an electric lawn mower, if you have to, and if you really want to do your part and get a great workout, use a non-electric, non-gas mower. Instead of gas or electric trimmers, use old-fashioned hedge trimmers. Instead of electric edgers, use manual ones. Instead of herbivores, get on your knees and pull those weeds. It’s a great exercise!

2. Do not bag grass clippings! Sure, it makes your lawn look better and it’s easier than raking, but you’re not doing the environment any good. That grass clipping should be left alone, so it can naturally decompose, which in turn feeds nutrients into the soil.

3. If you must water your lawn, do it once a day and do it early in the morning. Don’t over-water the lawn. Also keep in mind that it may not look as fabulous when it’s not well-watered, but when the rains come, and they always do eventually, it will regain its good healthy green color again. Sometimes, it is better to let Mother Nature take care of nature.

4. Use a rake. Avoid using blowers and such. These only raise dust and are not very good for the environment. Raking is fine, and it’s great exercise. If you don’t want to do it, hire a neighborhood guy to do it for you.

5. Create a compost pile or bin. This compost is an excellent natural fertilizer and allows you to recycle your waste, as long as the waste is ‘natural’ to begin with. Compost piles are very easy to create. The environment will thank you, and your gardens will too later on.
